Abstract
Cellulose esters obtained with the aid of sulphuric acid are stabilized by treating with methanol, alone or in solution in water, petrol, benzol or carbon tetrachloride, without pressure or heating. Some acetone or diacetone alcohol may be added to the methanol. In an example, fibrous cellulose triacetate, e.g. as produced according to Specification 381,991, is drained and treated for 3 hours at 25 DEG C. in a bath of 98 per cent methanol, then removed and dried. In a further example, nitrocellulose is drained and treated for 3 hours at 25 DEG C. with a mixture of 10 parts of methanol and 90 parts of petrol, or 85 parts of petrol and 5 of acetone, and then removed and dried.
