Abstract

677,329. Sterilizing and filling barrels. BARNES, F. J. T. Nov. 8, 1949 [April 8, 1949], No. 9662/49. Class 21 Barrels and the plant for filling them are sterilized throughout and the sterilizing fluid removed by inert gas prior to the filling, valve controls permitting the operations to be carried out in sequence. The sterilizing fluid, perferably steam, is passed through a storage tank 8, control valve box 10 and barrel 9 and all interconnecting piping, the steam passing to atmosphere through exhausts 64, 65, 69. The gas, CO 2 , is passed through the system, the vessels 8, 9 being previously cooled by water sprays 60, 61, 63, the gas removing steam and condensate. The filling liquid, beer, passes from a sterilizing heat exchanger 7 to the tank 8 and from thence to the barrel 9 via the pipe 24. A sight glass 54 indicates when the barrel is full, gas under pressure is trapped in the barrel upon disconnection of pipes 23, 24, fittings which may be as described in Specifications 400,374, 430,172, 449,764, 605,157, sealing the openings as the pipes are withdrawn. The barrel may be fed by co-axial pipes if it has a single opening. The valve box 10 comprises six valves, operated in pairs by a camshaft and a rachet handle. Specifications 428,703, 534,628, 599,766 also are referred to.
