Abstract
<PICT:0676456/III/1> An apparatus for homogenizing and sterilizing liquid and semi-liquid substances comprises an elongated vessel, means for feeding the substance into the vessel near the top thereof, a compressed air jet for breaking up the supplied substance into particles, and sources of ultra violet rays so disposed as to direct the rays at spaced apart locations on to the particles falling down the vessel. With the apparatus of the drawing, milk is fed through a pipe 2 into a cylinder 3 and is there broken up into fine particles by air delivered by a pipe 4 from a compressor 5, and the particles, which take at least 5 sec. to fall through the cylinder, are irradiated in their descent by a u.v. lamp 6 at the top of the cylinder, by u.v. lamps 7 and 8 mounted in oblique lateral extensions to the cylinder, and, if desired also by a u.v. lamp 8a at the bottom of the cylinder.
