Abstract
In the preparation of catalysts by impregnating the surface of porous carrier material with solutions, e.g. of salts of platinum, gold, or nickel, the carrier is heated to a temperature above the boiling point of the impregnating solution and the solution is at a temperature close to or at its boiling point. A carrier, e.g. of ceramic material, which has a low resistance to temperature changes, is heated to only a little above the temperature of the solution. The depth of penetration of the solution may be controlled by varying the temperature difference between the solution and the carrier. After impregnation the catalyst may be fixed by heating, oxidation, or reduction, and the steps of impregnation and fixing may be repeated. Examples describe the coating of a porous alumina tube with platinum, and of ring-shaped bodies of sillimanite with nickel. In coating the inner surface of a tube, the impregnating solution may be passed through the tube.ALSO:In coating porous carrier material with metals to form catalysts by impregnation with solutions of salts of the metals and subsequent reduction, the carrier is heated to a temperature above the boiling point of the solution and the solution is used at a temperature close to or at its boiling point. A carrier, e.g. of ceramic material, which has a low resistance to temperature changes, is heated to only a little above the temperature of the solution. Examples describe coating (1) a porous alumina tube with platinum, and (2) ring-shaped bodies of sillimanite with nickel. Coating with gold is also referred to.
