Abstract
674,475. Testing alignment of vehicles. NEWNHAMS, Ltd., and SNELL, C. S. Aug. 28, 1950 [June 7, 1950], No. 14215/50. Class 106 (ii). Apparatus for testing alignment of a vehicle comprises a hollow shaft e having at one end a centrally-apertured disc 17 arranged with its aperture 18 on the axis of the shaft, and at the other end an eye-piece 20 for viewing axially through the shaft and the disc to establish a line of sight, and two similar supports 11 for the shaft, slidably engaged and adapted to be locked in position thereon, both the supports having at least one laterallyprojecting arm 13 bearing at its extremity a member 14 for contact with the surface of the vehicle to be tested, whereby the axis of the shaft e and the line of sight therethrough are made parallel to the principal plane of the surface. In Fig. 4 the telescope eye - piece 20 is arranged for vertical viewing through a reflector set at 45 degrees. A sight-line indicator comprising a stand 2, Fig. 2, with a suspended metal rod 5 serving as a plumb line, and an adjustable sighting plate 10 is used in establishing a datum line, Fig. 7, a measuring rod 22 supported on V-blocks and carrying adjustable pointers j, k serving to compare the results with reference to a central point on the vehicle. Only one sighting shaft is necessary, and the measuring rod need not extend the full width of the vehicle. The adjustment of head lamps is described.
