Abstract

324,124. Douglas, R. Oct. 23. 1928. Linear-dimension gauges.-The linear dimensions of an object are determined by the use of a prism having a very obtuse angle at its apex associated with a scale forming part of the base of the instrument. The prism is arranged to be moved between the object and an eyepiece. A base 4 provided at one end with an eyepiece 5 carries the slidable prism holder 13 in which is mounted the prism 2 of either of the forms shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and is fitted at the other end with an object-holder 7. The holder 13 may be rotatable about an horizontal axis and fitted with both forms of prisms so that either may be used for the determination required. The object to be measured is placed in the holder 7 and centred by the clamp 8. The prism is then moved along the base until the edges of the images of the object in the eyepiece coincide when the dimension of the object can be read off on the base 4. In a modification an image of the object is projected by a source of light behind the object through the prism on to a screen and the prism similarly adjusted until the edges coincide and no shadow appears on the screen. The eyepiece, the centre of the object and the apex of the prism are arranged so that they are all located in the same plane.
