Abstract
672,423. Extracting metals; iron. tungsten, molvbdenum, cobalt, nickel. METROCUTANIT, Ltd. April 19, 1950 [May 10, 1949], No. 9658/50. Classes 72 and 82(i) [Also in Group XII] Metal powder is produced by a continuous process comprising heating a metallic oxide, salt or other compound in a reducing atmosphere, the material to be reduced being caused to travel through a furnace in a direction opposite to that of a reducing gas such as hydrogen and being supported in its passage through the furnace on a sieve-like surface so arranged that the material is exposed on all sides to the reducing atmosphere. Reduction may be effected in a muffle 1, Fig. 1, through which the material passes on sieve-like insets 3'into boats 2, such insets 3 being arranged singly in the boats or in tiers. Alternatively, a tubular furnace may be employed, Fig. 3, the material being fed through a mesh cylinder 5, or several such cylinders. The reducing atmosphere may consist of hydrogen containing 5-25 per cent of ammonia. Tungsten, molybdenum, iron, cobalt and nickel powders may be so produced.
