Abstract
670,482. Electrolytic protection from corrosion. ABBEY, A. (Dow Chemical Co.). Dec. 23, 1949, No. 32991/49. Class 41. [Also in Group XVIII] A packaged anode for use in cathodic protection systems comprises a magnesium metal anode 6 embedded in a self-sustaining porous mass 8 of a granular electrolyte selected from the class consisting of alkaline-earth metal hydroxides and alkali- and alkaline-earth metal salts of acids which form water-soluble magnesium salts, the mass being cemented together by magnesium oxysulphate. The electrolyte 8 may, for example, consist of calcined gypsum. The cemented mass may contain fillers such as sand, gravel, crushed washed coke, and may contain also granular magnesium hydroxide or oxide to maintain alkalinity. Powdered or granular bentonite may also be added to the mass. The magnesium oxysulphate may function not only as cement but also as electrolyte. The mass may be strengthened by the provision of burlap wrapped spirally around the anode. The anode 6 which may be cast around a steel cable 7 is shown connected by a conductor 9 to a steel pipe-line 4 which it is desired to protect. Specification 641,022, [Group XVIII], is referred to.
