Abstract
641,022. Preventing corrosion. ALUMINUM CO: OF AMERICA. Dec. 24, 1947, No. 34224. Convention date, Oct. 25,1946. [Class 123(i)] An anode package for use in cathodic systems of preventing corrosion in underground metallic structures, comprises a metallic electrode 18 which is partially or wholly enveloped and contacted by a rigid mass 19 containing any chemical which promotes the action of the device. The electrode 18 and envelope 19 comprise a single unit which is buried in the earth, the electrode being connected to the system to be protected by a conductor 20. The envelope 19 may be of cement, plastic, ceramic, or some forms of gelatin, and after being formed round the electrode 18, has the required chemical placed in its pores by immersion or impregnation, or alternatively the mass and the chemical may be mixed prior to forming round the electrode. Examples are zinc or magnesium electrodes with calcium sulphate cement or an aluminium electrode with a cement envelope of magnesite and sand, moistened by a saturated solution of magnesium chloride.
