Abstract

670,416. Metal-vapour discharge apparatus. BERTELE, H. C. April 16, 1948 [April 17, 1947], No. 10206/47. Class 39 (i). In electric discharge apparatus having a metallic pool cathode, the arc-spot is anchored to the peripheral edge of the pool by forming the container of a metal such as tungsten or molybdenum which is arc-resistant and resistant to sputtering, and is also wetted by the cathode liquid. A short heat-transfer path is thus provided to the exterior surface of the container which has an extended area, or is in contact with a forced current of cooling fluid. The container may have an additonal arcfixing surface, for example as in Fig. 6, where an annular surface 36 is formed by an annular boss 35 in the pool container 34. The surface 36 may be of a spongy nature, which assists in holding the arc, as described in Specification 670,485. In this form, a copper ring 40 with integral cooling fins 8 fits over the container. In the arrangement of Fig. 4, the pool container 4 is supported within a steel valve body 1 by means of a glass ring 15, which has a flanged shield 19 to prevent wall-to-cathode shorting by mercury deposit on the ring. Cooling air or liquid may be circulated round the container, as shown.
