Abstract

668,816. Bed-settees. LODWICK AIRCRAFT INDUSTRIES, Inc. Oct. 23, 1950. [Nov. 2, 1949; Nov. 2,1949; Dec. 9, 1949] No. 25790/50. Class 52 (ii). [Also in Group XXV] A bed-settee comprises a base, three body-supporting sections two of said sections combining to form a back rest and being hinged together, the third section forming the seat portion and linked to the base. As shown the back rest 12 comprises two sections 13, 14 hinged together while the section 13 is carried by two levers 20, 23 pivoted to brackets 17, 19 on the base and section 13 respectively. The seat 11 is connected to the base 10 by a lever 33 pivoted at 34 to an extension 18 of the bracket 17 and to the seat at 36 and during unfolding of the settee the seat 11 is moved rearwardly and into a horizontal position by means of a link 37 pivoted at one end at 36 and at the other end 38 to a lever 28 having a slot 30 with which engages a pin 32 on an extension 31 of the lever 23, a counterbalancing spring 40 interconnecting the base 10 with a link 39 pivoted at 38 having a lateral projection 42 adapted to engage and support the lever 28. Continued unfolding from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 4 further rotates the lever 28 in the counterclockwise direction causing the seat 11 to be moved slightly forwardly to abut against the section 13 when the latter is in its horizontal bed position. The sections 13, 14 are arranged to hinge about an axis coinciding with the point 49, Fig. 3 but the hinge mechanism (see Group XXV) is arranged in spaced relation to the point 49. The hinge mechanism is linked by a link 66 to legs 15 adapted to support section 14 in bed position the legs being moved into operative position as the section 14 is unfolded. The chair or settee may be provided with arm rests which in operative position overlap the sides of the seat but may be folded outwardly and downwardly when the settee is unfolded to bed position.
