661,638. Closing containers. QUAKER OATS CO. Aug. 30, 1949 [ Oct. 20, 1948], No. 22508/49. Class 125,(ii) A cap is releasably secured in an opening in a wall of a container E, Fig. 2, as the latter is being formed on a mandrel 4 which is moved step by step through the positions A-D, by being inserted in the opening with a depressed portion G, Fig. 7, projecting inwardly and the rim G3 against the outside, and, while the cap is in the opening, upsetting the depressed portion to form a bead as shown in Fig. 8. This may be effected by moving a plunger 116 to squeeze the cap against a stationary anvil 20 within the mandrel, as in Fig. 8, or by moving the anvil against a plunger when the latter is stationary. The caps are delivered one at a time to a screw conveyer 46, 48, Fig. 2, and are removed therefrom by a transfer mechanism which swings them one at a time through 90 degrees and places them in the opening in the container at position B. The container now travels to position C, where the cap is upset by the plunger 116.
