Abstract
661,345. Joining strips of pile carpet. MACKAY, L. H., and MACKAY, J. Oct. 28, 1949 [Nov. 1, 1948], No. 25976/49. Divided out of 661,283. Class 142(iv). [Also in Group VIII] In a carpet formed by securing side - by - side similar strips of woven carpet, the height of the pile above the joins is maintained level with that of the rest of the carpet by omitting some of the stuffer warps from the backing at one or both selvedges of the adjacent strips. A pileless selvedge 12 and a pile bearing selvedge 13 are reduced in thickness by omitting some of the stuffer warps 16 from each selvedge. When the selvedges are lapped and secured together by adhesive or by sewing the height of the pile is constant over the whole carpet. In an alternative construction only one selvedge is reduced in thickness and the slight additional thickness caused by the selvedge lap is accommodated in the underfelt usually placed under carpets. The pile at the selvedges may be denser or of thicker yarn to make the join less noticeable.
