Abstract

Materials for the manufacture of firebricks such as silicon carbide and alumina, are treated to protect them against chemical and erosive attack in use by coating the grains, before mixing with the usual agglutinating agent, with a solution or suspension of a protecting agent such as sillimanite or corundum and a binding agent, e.g. sodium silicate, borax, dextrin, molasses, or glycerine or a flux such as cryolite, and drying at a temperature below, equal to, or above that at which the bricks are finally baked.
