[Classes 120(i) and 120(ii)] A gill spinning frame of the type in which fibres from the faller bed pass around a drawing roller and thence with a change of direction through a smoothing die to a flyer has a guide surface for deflecting the fibres as they pass towards the mouth of the smoothing die. The guide surface may be stationary, moving, or a combination of these. It may take the form of a wall 18 of a conductor 19 mounted on top of a two-part smoothing die 20, 21, Fig. 1, or may be the rear face of a conductor which extends over the drawing roller 11 and embraces the pressing roller 12. This rear face may be fixed or adjustable by a screw 45, Fig. 4. In an alternative embodiment, the guide surface may be pivoted and its upper end may rest against the drawing roller. In a further embodiment, a belt may pass over the pressing roller 12 and downwards over the surface of the drawing roller. Another arrangement, Fig. 10, has an additional roller 51, which co-operates with a plate 53 to deflect fibres downward. Alternatively, the pressing roller 12 may be located in front of the drawing roller 11 and an auxiliary roller positively driven at the same speed as the drawing roller may be mounted on top of the latter. The smoothing die shown in Fig. 1 may be in two parts 20, 21, part 21 being adjustable by a spring and screw 22. Capstans 35 mounted on the flyer may be driven by gear wheels 36 from a pinion 37 on a hollow spindle driven or controlled by a belt 39. The pressing roller 12 may be weighted by a loaded lever 16 pivoted at 17 on a forked guide arm 14.
