Abstract
A copper base alloy comprises 85-90 per cent copper; 0.5-1.25 per cent nickel; 0.06-0.3 per cent phosphorus, the ratio of phosphorus to nickel being not higher than 1 : 3 at least 7 per cent zinc, the total of zinc and copper being at least 96 per cent; tellurium, selenium and/or lead in such quanttities that lead alone is present in an amount of 0.75-2.5 per cent or tellurium and/or selenium (without lead) are present in an amount of 0.2-0.75 per cent in total or lead with tellurium and/or selenium is present in an amount of 0.2-2.5 per cent. The alloy may be heat-treated by quenching from 1200 DEG -1600 DEG F. followed by precipitation hardening at 700 DEG -1000 DEG F. The alloy may contain up to 0.1 per cent of bismuth, up to 0.2 per cent of aluminium and up to 0.1 per cent of silicon.
