Abstract
652,354. Discharge apparatus. SOC. D'APPLICATIONS TELEPHONIQUES. Aug. 13, 1946, No. 24066. Convention date, Sept. 11, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] An electron optical system comprises a photo-cathode 1, electron-multiplying surfaces 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and a fluorescent screen 10 in an exhausted tube comprising two chambers joined by a throttled part, which contains the multiplier. Magnetic means 3, 4, 11 disposed outside the tube produce intense magnetic fields with non-rectilinear lines of force. The multiplying surfaces are semi-transparent to electrons, and substantially impervious to ions and atoms preventing their movement from one chamber to another and may comprise a fine tissue of metallic wires coated with secondaryelectron-emitting material. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes the use of aluminium or glass fibres coated with secondary emitting material as the multiplier surfaces, and may replace the fluorescent screen by a photographic plate or similar system. It also refers to coils producing the required magnetic fields. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
