Abstract
651,487. Bottle capping machines. SCOTTS ENGINEERING (NEWPORT), Ltd., and BURDIN, N. V. May 3, 1948, No. 12028. [Class 125(ii)] In a machine for capping bottles or the like, the load required for the capping operation is applied to the capping head by a resilient member, which is adapted to be loaded gradually, and to be released when required, to provide the said load, thus avoiding undue variation in the output from the machine driving mechanism. In the form shown, a horizontal driven cam shaft 4 carries cams 5 and 6 which engage followers 7 and 8. Cam 5 is profiled so that it lifts the follower 7 gradually, compressing a spring 10 from its lower end. During this operation, the upper end of the spring is held stationary by a link 17 connected to the cap 18 which abuts the said upper end, the link being connected by a lever 13 to the follower 8 which, at this time, is bearing on a concentric portion of the cam 6. A beam 20 is mounted so that one end bears on the cap 18 and the other on the capping head 22 which is of the form described in Specification 651,486. At the appropriate moment the follower 8 engages a stepped down portion of the cam 6 and, through lever 13 and link 17, releases the upper end of the spring, which then exerts its accumulated energy on the beam 20 to effect the capping operation.
