Abstract
647,411. Supply systems for discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 19, 1948, No. 1607. Convention date, Jan. 18, 1947. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A thermal lock-out switch for a discharge lamp comprises normally-closed contacts 12, 13, carried by bi-metal strips 9, 14, the former of which gives ambient-temperature compensation. The contacts 12, 13, are connected in series with a low-resistance heater 16, which may be of the type described in Specification 624,410, the lamp filaments, and a glow discharge starter switch 7. The heater 16 is connected to the strip 14 by a member 17 of good heat-conducting material and a highresistance carbon heater 18 is connected to the strip at 20, by a short conductor 19. If the switch 7 fails to start the lamp, the strip 14 is heated gradually by resistance 16, so that contacts 12, 13, are eventually opened and the line voltage is applied across the lamp. If the lamp still fails to strike, the voltage appears across the heater 18 and after several starting attempts, the heat from 18 will be sufficient to maintain the strip 14 in its distorted position to lock out the switch.
