Abstract

675,262. Thermal switches. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL, Ltd., SELL, E. A. F., HOLMES, T., and MOLL, J. A. M. VAN. Oct. 5, 1950. [April 24, 1948] No. 12356/46. Class 38 (v). In a glow discharge switch the bimetallic strip electrode 6, or one or each of the bimetallic strip electrodes in a switch in which both electrodes are bimetallic, is provided with a metal tube 7 secured in metallic contact with the bimetallic strip at a point between the ends of the latter. The bimetallic strip 6 may be curved as shown and carry a contact 8, the tube 7 being fixed mid-way between the ends of the strip. The tube 7 which is preferably of nickel and cylindrical has a length equal to the width of the strip. In operation, a normal glow discharge occurs between the strip 6 and the electrode 4 and in addition a more intense discharge occurs inside and/or at the ends of the tube. When the contacts 4, 8 close and the glow discharges are extinguished, the strip 6 is prevented from cooling to the temperature at which the contacts reopen until the heat which has been stored up by the tube 7 has flowed to the strip and has been dissipated. This ensures an adequate pre-heating period when the switch is used as a starter switch for an electric discharge lamp.
