Abstract

Mono- or di-nitro-hydroxy-anthraquinones, e.g. 4.8 - dinitro - anthrarufin or 4.5 - dinitrochrysazin, are heated with primary amines in presence of water at 100-130 DEG C., to replace one nitro group by substituted amino to give blue dyes for cellulose acetate or other cellulose derivatives. Amines specified are toluidine, amino - ethyl - benzene, amino - acetophenone, aminophenol, aminocresol, sulphanilamide, p-aminobenzamide, p-aminobenzoic acid and its esters, p - anisidine, p - phenetidine, 2.5-dimethoxyaniline, p-phenylene diamine, naphthylamine, methylamine, ethylamine, propylamine, butylamine, ethanolamine, butanolamine, 3 - amino - 4 - heptanol, tris - hydroxymethylamino - methane, cyclo - hexylamine, benzylamine, aminopyridine, or aminoquinoline. Other anthraquinones specified are 4.8-dinitro - anthrachrysone, 1.6 - dihydroxy - 4.5-dinitro - anthraquine, 1.7 - dihydroxy - 4.5-dinitro - anthraquinone, 4 - nitro - alizarin, 4 - nitro - anthragallol, 1 - hydroxy - 4 - nitroanthraquinone. In examples: (1) 4.8-dinitroanthrarufin is reacted with aniline, p-sulphonilamide, or p-toluidine to give the corresponding 8 - anilido -, 8 - (p - sulphanilamido) -, and 8-p-toluido-anthraquinones; also (2) 4.5-dinitrochrysazin is reacted with tris-hydroxymethylamino-methane, to give the corresponding 5-tris - hydroxymethyl - methylamino) - anthraquinone.
