Abstract

An aqueous gelatinous detergent composition comprises a water-soluble cellulose ether, a solid filler, and a water-soluble detergent compound (other than a salt of a fatty acid) which is capable of precipitating the cellulose ether in gelatinous form from aqueous solution. The cellulose ether may be a methyl, methyl-ethyl or hydroxyethyl cellulose or a water-soluble alkali-metal salt of carboxymethyl cellulose, and may be used in association with sodium chloride or other sodium salts frequently present in the crude ethers. The water-soluble detergent compound may be an anionic surface-active compound, e.g. an alkali-metal salt of a sulphated or sulphonated aliphatic alcohol, or a non-ionic detergent compound, e.g. a condensation product of ethylene oxide and an alkylphenol; cationic surface-active agents may also be used, but not in association with salts of carboxymethyl cellulose. The filler may be kieselguhr, precipitated chalk, steatite, china clay, magnesium carbonate, wood flour, pumice, bentonite or fuller's earth. The compositions may also contain soap as an additional ingredient, with or without effect materials such as lanoline, petroleum jelly, perfumes or dyestuffs. The products may be shaped under pressure to form bars, rods, cakes, tablets and like products. In the examples: (1) crude sodium carboxymethyl cellulose containing sodium chloride is mixed with an aqueous solution of an ethylene oxide-octylphenol condensation product, and precipitated chalk is worked into the jelly so obtained; (2) the condensation product of example (1) is replaced by the product sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Teepol," and magnesium carbonate and lanoline are worked into the jelly; (3) a methyl-ethyl cellulose is mixed with a solution of "Teepol," and precipitated chalk and pine oil are worked into the jelly; (4) a methyl-ethyl cellulose is mixed with a solution of trimethylammonium bromide, and precipitated chalk is worked into the jelly.
