Abstract
645,660. Glass-to-metal seals. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 12, 1948, No. 26544. [Class 36] An electric discharge device in which electrodes 2, 3 are supported by leads 5, 6 which are sealed through the glass base of an envelope 1, is manufactured by inserting the leads in vertical holes in a mould 4 so that the electrodes are supported in the desired positions, placing a cylinder of glass on the mould so that it surrounds the electrodes and then heating the mould and the glass so that the glass flows across the top of the mould to form a base through which the leads are sealed. The mould 4 is made of a material such as carbon which does not fuse to glass, and is supported on an insulating block 7 which in turn rests on a metal block 8 having holes or grooves 9, 10, 11 for receiving the leads. If the block 8 is provided with holes these may have shoulders on which the lower ends of the leads rest, or if the block is grooved the leads are held in position by springs such as 12, 13. Glass collars such as 19 may be secured to one or more of the leads prior to their insertion into the mould. The whole assembly may be inserted in a bell jar 17 during the sealing process, an inert atmosphere being maintained within the jar. The heating may be effected by means of a high-frequency heating coil 18.
