Abstract

643,655. Magnetrons. THOMSON, A. F. H., WRIGHT, G. P., RANGABE, A. R., and BUCKINGHAM, J. Sept. 3, 1946, No. 26426. [Class 39 (i)] The cathode 11 of a magnetron is heated by electron bombardment from a separate cathode 22, for emission during operation or for processing or for degassing during manufacture. The cathode is supported on a conical frustum 20 having an internal recess 29 into which the electron beam is directed. The frustum 20 also serves to radiate excess heat developed in the cathode by back-bombardment. Focusing may be by electrode 23 or by the magnetic field of polepieces 15, 16. The cathode 23 is in a separately evacuated space to avoid poisoning during manufacture. In modifications, the recess 29 extends right into the emissive portion of the cathode, which may be wholly of thoria joined to the end supports by graded seals or a tungsten core surrounded by a thoria sleeve, as in Specification 643,656.
