Abstract
643,637. Inductances. EKCO-ENSIGN ELECTRIC, Ltd., and STICKLEY, W. A. Aug. 7, 1948, No. 20886. [Class 38 (ii)] A ballast for use with an electric discharge lamp comprises two inductance coils c, d mounted on a common core e and arranged so that the adjacent poles of the windings are similar, the electrical characteristics of the ballast being adjusted by variation of the distance between the coils, the coils being permanently fixed after adjustment, e.g. by impregnating the whole assembly in a thermosetting material. The heavy broken lines indicate the paths of the magnetic flux so that the spaces g form air gaps in these paths. Movement of the coils towards each other causes the fluxes across the air gaps to be bunched together having an effect similar to that of increasing the length of the air-gaps.
