[Class 20(ii)] A scaffold frame unit comprises two vertical tubular members 21, 22 rigidly and permanently connected together by a horizontal tubular member 23 which is adapted to engage and support a staging or platform extending transversely of the frame unit, and a pair of clamping devices 25 secured permanently to the frame unit and adapted to secure it to tubular ledges 29, which support putlogs 46 and which are at a lower level than the horizontal member 23, which member 23 is characterized in that its diameter is less than that of the ledgers 29, each clamping device 25 being adapted to secure the ledgers so that they are spaced slightly below the horizontal member 23 so that the latter can support the staging or platform at the same level as the putlogs 46 support it while being of less diameter than the putlogs. Each clamping device 25 comprises a bracket 26 at the junction of the members 21, or 22, and 23 and secured permanently at both ends to both members or at one end only to one member and a threaded socket 43 for a clamping screw 31 whose inner end is rotatably connected to a pressure plate 32 curved to engage the ledger 29 and having spaced ears 33 which engage both sides of the bracket 26 to prevent rotation. Where one end only of the bracket 26 is fixed to the frame, Fig. 4, the ledger may be inserted in the clamp by a movement transverse to its length. The horizontal member 23 is of smaller diameter than the vertical members of the frame and therefore, if the putlogs 46 are the same in diameter as the vertical members, to ensure proper clamping of the ledgers a distance piece 45 is welded underneath the horizontal member 23. The arrangement is then such that the upper surface of a putlog 46 laid across the ledgers 29, Fig. 7, will be level with the upper surface of the members 23 to provide a level support for the battens 24. The frame unit has oblique bracing members between the bottoms of the vertical members and the middle of the horizontal member, or a pair of vertically spaced horizontal bracing members, or another horizontal member at the bottom with clamping devices at its junctions with the vertical members.
