Abstract
640,487. Sealing washers for nail heads. HOLCOMB, R. L. Feb. 24, 1948, No. 5473. Convention date, Oct. 7, 1946. [Class 89(i)] Nails, particularly those used for fixing flat aluminium sheets, are provided with elastic washers made of natural or synthetic rubber or like material to seal the hole against water and to insulate the nail from the sheet to reduce risk of corrosion. The washer 14, Fig. 2, has a counterbore 16 to receive the head of the nail and a recess 17 that passes freely over the shank to facilitate assembly and is closed by a thin web 18 that can easily be pierced by the point forming a sealing flange 19, Fig. 4, that prevents accidental removal of the washer and insulates the shank from the sides of the holes in the sheet. Modified forms of washer are shown in Figs. 6, 10 and 14. The web may be formed initially with a small hole.
