Abstract
639,705. Discharge apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. April 9, 1948, No. 9945. Convention date, April 15, 1947. [Class 39 (i)] A discharge - tube - envelope comprises two moulded glass bases spaced apart by glass rods fused thereto, and surrounded by a tubular wall-member sealed to the bases. The electrode structure may be mounted directly on terminal pins in the base. The envelope is made in four operations in nickel-flanged jigs heated by H.F. induction until the glass melts to fuse the parts together. In the first operation the rods 7, and base 1 are held in a jig such as Fig. 1, with nickel flanges 3, 4 to unite the rods and base. Secondly the rods are fused to the other base 11, in a similar jig with flange 4 diametrically split for removal from the rods, Fig. 2 (not shown). Thirdly, after mounting the electrode structure on the terminal pins, a tubular glass wall 24 is sealed at its lower end 28 to the base 1, in a jig such as Fig. 3, and finally the upper part of the tube 24 is sealed to the base 11 in a further jig, Fig. 4 (not shown).
