Abstract

638,445. Feeding sheets. LANIGAN & CROSS, Inc. Dec. 2, 1947, No. 31837. Convention date, Aug. 14, 1940. [Class 100 (i)] A sheet-registering device for controlling the advance of sheets as they approach front stops 86 is constructed with a pair of reciprocating jaws disposed on opposite sides of the path of the advancing sheet, the jaws being driven so as to have the same speed as the sheet when the sheet passes between the jaws and to be subsequently decelerated as the jaws move to the front stops. The jaws are reciprocated by oscillating arms 36 actuated from a cam 26 which oscillates an arm 32 connected by a link 34 to an arm 36. The lower jaw 78 is formed on a reciprocating blade 64, to which is pivoted at 68 a blade 70 having a hook 72 adapted to rest on a pin 60 carried by an adjustable pivoted arm 58. The sheets are advanced over conveyer slats 14 supported by a feed table 10, and as the front edge of a sheet passes between the open jaws 76, 78 the blade 64 is accelerated as the cam roller 30 moves from position A to position B. The jaws can deal with sheets which are slightly in advance or arrear of correct time, and when the sheet is gripped, the hook 72 is no longer held raised by the pin 60 and the grippers close and then are decelerated as the roller 30 passes to position C of the cam. Near the front stops the blade 64 is supported by a tongue 84 projecting from the feed board 10. As the sheet is being registered by the stops 86 the nose 82 of the blade 64 passes between the arms 86 of the stops and the jaws move finally at a slow constant speed to draw the sheet against the guides. At the end of the movement a rod 102 lifts the jaws when a nut 106 on it is brought into engagement with a pivoted guide 100 through which it can slide. In a modification, Fig. 7, the lower jaw is formed as a spring jaw 78b connected by a screw 78c to the blade 64a. During final registration the jaw 78 is received in a recess 92 formed in a plate 90 secured to the feed board 10.
