Abstract

636,637. Windscreen cleaners. BATTERSBY, D. J. Nov. 4, 1947, No. 29439. [Class 138 (i)] A windscreen wiper comprises a block or like fitting adapted to be detachably secured to an oscillating driven spindle, a hollow housing pivotally mounted on the block to swing about an axis at right angles to the spindle, an arm carried by the housing and adapted to receive a wiper blade, and spring-loaded two-part throw-over toggle mechanism between the block and housing so arranged that in one position the wiper blade carried by the arm is resiliently urged against the surface of a windscreen or the like while in the other position the arm is held extended substantially at right angles to the screen. A windscreen wiper blade is attached to a rod g, Fig. 1, slidable in a bore in a channel-shaped housing f and fixable therein by a grub screw h, which housing is pivoted by a pin j to a block c detachably connected to a serrated collar b, fixed on the end of a driven spindle a, by means of a plate d secured by a screw to a lug e on the block. The wiper blade is urged into contact with the windscreen by means of a spring-loaded toggle mechanism comprising a coiled compression spring k and a loose plate l. One end of the spring abuts the inner end of the bore receiving the rod g and is prevented from lateral displacement by a peg o or an inwardly extending part of the inner end of the wiper arm. Alternatively this end of the spring. may be connected to a plate t, Fig. 7, fixed to a boss on the housing f by a screw u. The other end of the spring connects with a lug n of the plate l, Fig. 4, while the other end of the plate engages with a recess m in the block c and which plate is prevented from lateral displacement in the recess by a notch p co-operating with a rib on the base of the recess. The toggle mechanism also allows for the wiper blade and housing to be rotated about the pin and to be retained in a position substantially at right angles to the windscreen, as shown in Fig. 2. In another embodiment the block c may comprise a split clamp which is fixed to the collar b by a screw. It is also stated that the serrated collar b is not essential and that the block c may be secured directly on the spindle a. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7, the block c is secured to the serrated collar b on the spindle a by a shoe r which is retained in position by a screw s. The Provisional Specification states that the wiper arm can be readily adjusted in length and that the grub screw h or the part of the housing f in which it is mounted may be adapted for the connection of a rod or link to operate a tandem arm and blade.
