Abstract

635,725. Tubular wire-rope stranding machines. SOMERVILLE, W. E. July 14, 1947, No. 18633. Convention date, Aug. 1, 1945. [Class 109] In a tubular wire-rope stranding machine, the tube sections are connected together by universal joints or other flexible connections to prevent " whip " or vibration during rotation, such connectors being of small diameter compared with that of the tube so that room is provided for the unobstructed passage of the wires from the hollow trunnions to the periphery of the tube. The flexižle connectors are themselves attached to transverse " spiders " within the tube sections at a short distance from the ends thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 show the junction between two of the tube sections 2, 3, which carry bobbins 5 supported on cradles 6 in the usual manner and are themselves supported on external bearings not shown. The universal joint consists of a split ring 12 having four bearings for pairs of trunnions 11 arranged in the transverse plane of the gap separating the tube sections and carried respectively by brackets 9 supported by spiders 8 within the ends of the tube sections. The dimensions are such that the wire A has unobstructed passage from the hollow trunnion 7 to the periphery of the adjacent tube section. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 7, brackets 15 are similarly clamped to a stiff fibre plate or disc 17 to give the desired flexibility.
