Abstract
Mineral acids, e.g. sulphuric acid, are reconcentrated and recovered from the spent acid resulting from the acid treatment of hydrocarbons by heating the spent acid in the presence of a small quantity, e.g. 0.001 to 1 per cent by weight of the acid to be concentrated, of an acid resistant hydrocarbon oil (to inhibit foaming) which is incompletely volatilizable at the temperature maintained during the heating. Hydrocarbon oils, e.g. white oil, having a gravity of 28 DEG A.P.I. are suitable, and may be mixed with a small quantity, e.g. 4 per cent by volume, of a high molecular weight organic acid such as stearic, palmitic or oleic acid. The oil may be added to the acid in a reboiler or to the acid feed to the reboiler or by intermittent injection into the acid feed or to the reboiler.
