Abstract

Aluminium and zinc polythionates, e.g. penta- and tetra-thionate are stabilized in aqueous solution by the addition thereto of copper or ferric salts or other salts by the method disclosed in Specification 632,927.ALSO:A sulphur containing cosmetic preparation consists of a solution of polythionic acid compounds substantially free from elementary sulphur in admixture with the conventional constituents of cosmetic preparations, which are chemically and therapeutically compatible therewith and which do not contain sulphur or consist solely of water. The polythionic acid compounds may be stabilized by the process disclosed in Specification 632,927 in which salts of such polyvalent heavy metals as are capable of forming in said solutions compounds of said metals in the oxidized and reduced states. The products may be perfumed in which case solution promotors such as triethanolamine and wetting and emulsifying agents may be present. Examples are given of (a) a hair wash consisting of an aqueous solution of penta-and tetra-thionic acid to which triethanolamine is added to pH 2.5 followed by copper sulphate, tyrosine, a fatty acid amide sulphonate, perfume and alcohol. (b) a skin wash in which triethanolamine is added to an aqueous solution of zinc penta- and tetra-thionic acid to a pH of 2.5; followed by a copper or ferric salt, perfume and alcohol. (c) a perspiration inhibitor containing aluminium penta- and tetra-thionate in equeous solution, stabilized and having in addition perfume, alcohol and sulphonated oleyl alcohol. (d) a face wash of a stabilized zinc penta- and tetra-thionate in aqueous alcohol containing perfume and sulphonated lauryl alcohol and (e) a cream in which a stabilized zinc penta- and tetrathionate is incorporated in an ointment base.
