Abstract

Cosmetic preparations for the hair and scalp contain 2.4-dihydroxy-3.3-dimethyl butyric-acid-(31-hydroxy propyl)-amide or a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0576314/VI/1> wherein X represents -CH2OH1-COOH or -COO-metal (obtained as described in Specifications 568,355 and 570,533, [both in Group IV], in a solvent therefor. Especially suitable for influencing hair-growth are the d (+) forms and the racemates and advantageously the alkali metal salts are used. The concentration of the compound in the preparation may be from 0.5 per cent. to 50 per cent. or more and other ingredients normally used in the preparation of ointments, pomades and lotions for the treating the scalp may be present. In Examples: (1) d(+)-2.4-dihydroxy-3.3-dimethyl butyric acid-(31hydroxypropyl)-amide in 55 per cent. alcohol, or in a non-alcholic solvent is coloured and perfumed and further solvent is added to obtain a hair lotion containing 5 per cent. of the compound; (2) d(+) - 2.4 - dihydroxy - 3.3 - dimethylbutyric acid-(31-hydroxypropyl)-amide in water at 40-50 DEG C. is stirred into a molten mixture at 30-45 DEG C. cetyl alcohol, wool fat, Vaseline (Registered Trade Mark), liquid paraffin, and p-hydroxybenzoic acid methyl ester, stirring until cold and perfuming to obtain a hair cream; (3) dl-2.4-dihydroxy-3.3-dimethylbutyric acid-(11-methyl-31-hydroxypropyl)-amide is added to a mixture at 40 DEG C. of the methyl-and n-propyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, dissolved in distilled water, and the solution is coloured, perfumed and diluted with water to a 5 per cent concentration; (4) d(+)-2.4-dihydroxy-3.3-dimethylbutyric acid-(11methyl-31-hydroxypropyl)-amide in distilled water, is stirred into a molten mixture of spermaceti, liquid paraffin, solid paraffin, cetyl alcohol and sodium sulpholaurate, and the preparation is perfumed to obtain a hair-cream; (5) Tinctura Capsici is added to a solution of sodium d(+)-2.4-dihrydoxy-3.3-dimethylbutyryl-b -minobutyrate in eau de cologne and the mixture is coloured and diluted to a 5 per cent. concentration of the sodium salt. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts comprises also (a) the use in the preparations of the N-(2:4-dihydroxy-3:3-dimethylbutyryl) derivatives of 1:3-hydroxypropylamine and of b -alanine and its metal salts, (b) an example in which an aqueous alcholic solution containing the sodium salt of d (+)-2.4-dihydroxy-3.3-dimethyl butyryl-b -alanine and sodium benzoate is coloured, perfumed and diluted to obtain a hair lotion. This subject matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
