Abstract
Refractory substances suitable for use as insulator bodies for spark plugs are obtained by forming a mixture of zirconium oxide, or a compound which, on calcination, yields zirconium oxide, having a particle size less than one micron and a magnesium compound existing as magnesium oxide at the temperature of calcination, the molal proportion of zirconia to magnesia in the mixture being between 2 : 1 and 1 : 2, calcining said mixture, forming into shape, drying and firing to vitrification. Preferred starting materials are zirconium oxysulphate and magnesium carbonate. Up to 10 per cent by weight of silica and/or of an oxide of calcium, strontium, barium or zinc, and/or up to 25 per cent of alumina may be incorporated in the mix.
