Abstract
Magnesia spinel, MgO.Al2O3, is prepared by calcining at 1000-1250 DEG C. a stoichiometric mixture of Mg(OH)2, MgCO3, basic MgCO3, or lightly calcined MgO, and a -Al2O3, lightly calcined Al2O3, or Al2O3 hydrate, together with (except when a -Al2O3 is used) 0.2-4% of a fluorine-containing material which forms HF during calcining, e.g. AlF3, F2, HF, NH4F, or CaF2. The Mg component is ground to 90% less than 10 microns, and the Al component to at least 40% less than 10 microns. The mixture may be in dry, pressed cake, or slurry form. In Example 1, the reactants were dry ground and pressed into bricks with gum arabic at 4000-8000 p.s.i. After firing, the bricks were crushed to give a reactive spinel, then dry pressed as before, and fired at 1600 DEG or 1650 DEG C. to give a product of density 3.08-3.49 g./c.c. In Example 4, the dense spinel was mixed with 17% of the reactive spinel and 5% concentrated MgCl2 solution, pressed into bricks, and fired at 1300-1900 DEG C.
