[Class 131] In a method of permanently waving hair a tress is wound under tension on a mandrel, placed in an envelope or holder and the mandrel rotated to partly uncoil the hair before subsequent treatment. As shown, the hair 1 is wound in croquinole fashion on a mandrel 5 adjustably supported in spring clips 4 mounted on the end brackets 3, 3a of a clamp 2. A perforated, tubular and longitudinally hinged envelope 6 is secured round the tress by the spring clip 10 and the mandrel, which may be subsequently removed, rotated to relax the tension before the hair is treated by an autogenous heating pad or electric heaters in lateral extensions of the envelope. In modifications the envelope 6 may be dispensed with the spring clip 10 and the end brackets of the clamp forming a holder to confine the hair when the tension is relaxed. The envelope may incorporate, on its inner surface, chemical treating elements and the mandrel may be perforated for the introduction of treating materials. In a further modification the envelope may be an open-ended tube into which the coiled tress is inserted endwise. The Provisional Specification describes the application of the method to spiral winding processes.
