631,239. Variable contact resistances. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. July 26, 1946, No. 22320. Convention date, Oct. 29, 1942. [Class 37] In a potentiometer having a scale for reading the position of the collecting contact relative to the resistance element, the scale is fixed and the element is movable, subject to the operation of a stopping mechanism. As shown, the manually rotatable knob 9 controls the position of the slider 8 on the resistance element 4, through the shaft 7, bush 5 and disc 6. The position of the slider on the element is shown by indicator 10 on scale 11. The spring 13, secured by pillars at the rear surface of face plate 2, bears a shaft 7 and urges the friction plate 14, secured to the potentiometer housing 3, against the face plate and thereby prevents rotation of the housing. When the knob 9 is pressed towards the plate 2, against the action of spring 13, the plate 14 separates from plate 2 and the housing 3 is then rotatable by the knob owing to friction forces between contact 8 and element 4. The pointer 17, keyed to bush 15, secured to plate 14 indicates the position of the housing on scale 16.
