Abstract
A typewriter ribbon or the like is made of woven fabric formed of high tenacity regenerated cellulose yarns that are made by stretching and later saponifying yarns of an organic ester of cellulose, the fabric being shrunk by treating it with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, and then impregnated with a ribbon-inking composition. The inked ribbon may be used in a cash register, adding-machine, or similar machine. A 4-12 per cent solution of caustic soda at 15-25 DEG C. may be used and the fabric may be immersed for 2-60 minutes, and then rinsed, scoured, and dried. Alternatively, the fabric may be padded with the alkali solution. The fabric may be woven as a ribbon of the required width, or a wide fabric may be subjected to the shrinking treatment and then slit to the desired width. The edges of such a slit ribbon may be coated with gums, resins, cellulose esters, or cellulose ethers, applied as a solution, to prevent ravelling. Shrinking may be effected after slitting a wide fabric into ribbons. Wide or narrow fabric may be woven from the stretched cellulose ester yarns and saponification may be conducted on the wide or narrow fabric. Yarns which have been stretched to 2000 per cent of their original length may be used. Organic or inorganic alkaline substances in aqueous or alcoholic solutions may be used for the saponification and the temperature may be 20-100 DEG C. Sodium hydroxide of 0.1-5.0 per cent strength may be used, if desired with sodium sulphate or acetate. In an example, a narrow ribbon is woven of high tenacity regenerated cellulose yarns obtained by saponifying stretched cellulose acetate yarns. The ribbon is shrunk by treatment with 8 per cent caustic soda solution, and washed and dried. The ribbon is then impregnated with typewriter ink.
