630,289. Frequency changing. KAHN, R. L. April 10, 1947, No. 9574. Convention date, Oct. 26, 1945. [Class 38 (ii)] Frequency converting apparatus without mechanically moving parts includes a toothed core with a winding producing a rotary field which causes a small proportion of teeth to be unsaturated while the others are saturated. As shown in Fig. 2, the two-phase input winding 33 is arranged on the outer part 31 of the core, as shown, while the output winding 40 is formed by threading a conductor alternately over and under a tooth until point 42 is reached, whereupon the wire is reversed on itself and threaded back. In Fig. 3 the output windings 56 are on teeth 52 extending between rings 50, 51 carrying input coils 60-63 on ring 50 and coils 64-67 on ring 51 for producing flux passing axially along the teeth, the coils 60, 62, 64, 66 being energized from one phase of a two-phase supply and the other coils from the other phase. Several other modifications are described giving frequency changes up to a ratio of 9-1. Several units may be cascaded for higher ratios. The number of teeth must be twice an odd number.
