Abstract
629,903. Magnetic fastenings. BICKELL, S. F., and SHAW, J. Feb. 27, 1947, Nos. 5737/47 and 5800/48. [Class 44] A device for holding or fastening a movable member against another member such as a door against its jamb comprises at least one magnet 1, Fig. 1, a co-operating keeper which may be another magnet or a piece of soft iron or steel 8, the magnet and the keeper 8 being associated respectively with either the door 3 or its jamb 2 or their equivalent members and in which the magnet or its keeper is carried by a movable resilient mounting in such a manner that the magnet and its keeper remain separated from each other when the movable member engages the other member until the resilient mounting is moved to bring the magnet and its keeper into contact. The magnet 1 housed in the jamb 2 attracts the keeper 8 attached to one end of a spindle 7 which is slidable in a hole in a flangelike extension 5 of the door 3. Interposed between the flange and the base of a knob 6 is a helical spring 9 having slightly less than the maximum strength of the magnet so that the spindle 7 is normally urged outwardly until the keeper 8 has been pressed into contact with the magnet 1, when the latter holds it tightly. Alternatively the spring 9 may be replaced by a leaf spring. In a modification, Fig. 3, the keeper is mounted at one end of a long leaf spring 10 housed inside the door 3 and having riveted to it at 19 a spring lever 13, pivoted at 14 and operable by means of a push button 22 which is slidable in a hole in the handle 20. The push button is urged to its outward position by having a washer 25 on its stem placed between a split pin 24 and a small leaf spring 23 which is clamped between the door framework 26 and the door panelling 27. In another modification a push button is not used as the handle is directly attached to the lever 13. The latch may be applied to a domestic cooker made of light metal, or alloy, such as aluminium, flux leakage being thereby avoided.
