Abstract

610,697. Automatic catches. CROSS, E. J. (Chicago Forging & Manufacturing Co.). April 15, 1946, No. 11511. [Class 44] A catch shown applied to a motor-car bonnet comprises a latch supporting plate 10 on one part having an aperture 15, a keeper 21 on the other part, a latch element 40 pivoted to the plate 10 to engage the keeper, an actuating lever 55 pivoted to the latch element at 56 and abutting the head of the keeper at X, a spring 58 attached at 160 to the actuating lever to urge the latch into the engaging position, and operating means such as a flexible cable 60 to rotate the actuating lever. The keeper has a conical head 25 with a shoulder 26 for engagement by the latch member 40. It is provided with a spring-loaded cup 28 which acts against the plate 10 to lift the top part when the keeper is released. The bonnet is retained partly opened after release by a spring-urged hook 30 pivoted to the bonnet and engaging the edge 14 of a hole 13 in the plate 10. The user may insert his hand and by lifting the arm 34, release the bonnet to be fully opened.
