Abstract

629,892. Valve closure members. SIEURIN, S. A. June 1, 1946, No. 16714. [Class 135] A through - way valve comprises a casing 1 with a cylindrical bore for an expansible plug comprising two semi-cylindrical members 18, 19 yieldingly forced against each other by a spring or springs, elastic split rings or like spring means and positively forced apart into contact with the cylindrical bore by two cone members 13, 14. One of the latter, 14 is carried on a removable threaded plug 3 and the other 13 is carried on a threaded part of the operating stem 7. The stem 7 carries a hand wheel 9 and a pointer 20 and rotates in a packing gland 10 11. The cone member 13 has lugs 15 engaging radial slots 16 in the upper surface of the plug such slots being formed partly in each semi-cylindrical member. Arcuate springs 17 embrace lugs formed on each side of the slots. The cone 13 and therefore the plug members are prevented from clockwise rotation by spring-pressed pawls 6 engaging an annular set of radial teeth 5 formed on a member 4 screwed inside the casing. In opening or closing the valve, a counterclockwise rotation of 90 degrees causes the cone 13 to ride up the stem until stopped by a collar 8. Thereafter a further counterclockwise rotation of 90 degrees opens or closes the valve. The stem 7 is then rotated clockwise for 90 degrees and since the cone 13 and the plug members are prevented from clockwise rotation by the pawls 6, the cone 13 rides down the operating stem and expands the plug into sealing contact with the cylindrical bore.
