679,706. Valve accessories. PEDERSEN, A. P. M. Dec. 21, 1950 [Dec. 22, 1949], No. 31159/50. Class 135. A pivoted valve having a spherical seat and rotating about a diameter of the sphere has a groove in its circumferential surface receiving a sealing ring and mechanical means in the groove inside the ring for pressing the ring towards the seat in the closed position under the control of a tightening member in the valve member operated from outside. As shown, a butterfly valve 3, operated by the handle 17 and spindle 20, has a groove 5 containing a metal ring 6 and balls 8. When the valve is closed a member 16 can pass a casing groove 23 when screw 24 is turned so that a rod 15 displaces a cam 14 which, through members 9, 10, 21, presses the balls together and presses the ring outwards. The ring 6 is divided in half and around the pivots of the valve, e.g. 30, two annular sealing rings, each divided in half, are leaf-spring pressed on to the casing and have their ends engaging the sides of the ring 6. Lubricant may be introduced to a recess 37 through a nipple in the pivot 30, the lubricant also serving to stop fluid penetrating cavities in the valve member. The cam 14 may be actuated by a screwed spindle 15, and the balls replaced by rollers, triangular members or chain links.
