Abstract
In the preparation of ethyl alcohol from a solution of diethyl sulphate in concentrated sulphuric acid, said solution is diluted with water to a 40-55 weight per cent sulphuric acid concentration, the major portion of the diethyl sulphate is hydrolysed in a first hydrolysis zone maintained at 80-90 DEG C., a stream of the partly-hydrolysed solution is passed through a second hydrolysis zone maintained at 80-95 DEG C. with sufficient residence time for substantially complete hydrolysis of the remaining diethyl sulphate, and alcohol is stripped with steam from the exit stream.
