627,994. Cutting slices in succession. BERKEL & PARNALL'S SLICING MACHINE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. (Maatschappij van Berkel's Patent N.V.). Oct. 9, 1946, No. 30123. [Class 28(ii)] In a disc knife slicing machine having a gauge 29 arranged beside the slicing knife in a plane slightly behind and parallel to the slicing plane, a slice thickness regulator 30 operatively connected to the gauge is also adapted to adjust the gauge through two ranges of slice thicknesses, and the feed mechanism has a slice thickness control device that is operatively connected to the regulator throughout the range of larger slice thicknesses only. As shown the carriage 3 is fitted with a feed plate 9 to which the substance may be clamped by clamp 8 or across which the substance may be hand fed. The feed plate has a saddle nut 10 engageable with a feed screw 10A having a ratchet-wheel 11 operated by a pawl 12. The pawl is carried by a lever 13 on the feed screw axis which has a tail 14 co-operating with a stationary striker 15 on the base 7. The slice-thickness control device comprises a cam 16 turnable below the pawl 12 about the feed screw axis and engageable with a pin 17 on the pawl. The gauge 29 is adjusted by a regulator 30, and associated with the feed mechanism through a rod 25 having at one end a roller 28 cooperating with the gauge plate and at the other a rack 27 meshing with a pinion 24. A stop 32 is also provided on the rod 25. A further rod 22 slidable in bearings 20 has a rack 21 meshing with the pinion 24. At the other end of this rod is another rack 19 meshing with the pinion 18 on the cam 16. A spring 23 urges the rod 22 away from the feed mechanism, thus urging the rod 25 towards the gauge plate 29 to the extent allowed by stop 32, so that for the range of lesser slice thicknesses the cam 16 to set by the position of the gauge plate. For greater slice thicknesses beyond the capacity of the feed mechanism, a suitable range is available by virtue of the gauge plate, the feed mechanism then being rendered idle by disconnecting the saddle nut 10A.
