Abstract
627,491. Clutches. MERCURY CLUTCH CORPORATION. March 1, 1946, No. 6453. Convention date, March 2, 1945. [Class 80 (ii)] In a liquid actuated clutch, the liquid preferably mercury in an annular flexible gland 29 housed in a driving member 21 secured to a shaft 2, is thrown centrifugally outward on rotation of the latter, and forces friction shoes 41 into frictional engagement with a driven member 6. The friction shoes 41 are housed in apertures in the side walls of the driving member. The clutch is held in the disengaged position by springs 40 between pressure plates 33 and the side faces of the driving member 21. In a modification, the flexible gland is rectangular in cross-section, and contains an annular filler ring, the clutch being engaged by the liquid under centrifugal force moving between the sides of the ring and the gland.
