Abstract

623,456. Ball bearings. SHAFER, J. E. Feb. 21, 1947, No. 5107. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] A bearing inner race 22 is secured on its shaft by two pairs of diametrically opposite set screws 35, 37, and 36, 38, at its opposite ends, the diametral planes containing each opposite pair being at rightangles so that tightening the screws tilts the race relative to the shaft (when clearance exists), but maintains it locked in this tilted position. The set screws have serrated ends to bite into the shaft. An outer race 18 has a spherical periphery 19 to permit tilting within a complementary bore 16 in a strap 15. The steel inner race is induction hardened near the ball-track and left soft near the ends. A labyrinth packing is provided comprising channel-shaped retainers 24 and z-shaped flingers 25 pressfitted to the inner and outer races 22, 18.
