[Class 83 (ii)] A method of making a hollow metal article comprises the interdiffusion of a metal with the surface of an iron or steel former and then dissolving the former to leave an article consisting of the layer resulting from the interdiffusion process. The invention is described as applied to the manufacture of a hollow blade for a gas turbine. A solid pattern of low carbon steel is heated to between 900‹ and 1100‹ C. in the presence of gaseous chromous chloride and hydrogen so that an interchange of chromium and iron atoms takes place with a consequent diffusion of chromitun into the surface of the steel pattern. After cooling, the surface layer of iron-chromium alloy is drilled and the pattern is immersed in nitric acid which dissolves the central steel portion leaving the iron-chromium shell. Instead of chromium, the surface of the iron may be alloyed with titanium, zirconium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, cobalt or nickel by treating the pattern with the halides of these elements. If a blade with a solid base is required, the pattern may be removed from the acid before the whole of the steel has been dissolved. The hollow article produced may be subjected to a further interdiffusion process to enrich the inner surface with chromium or other suitable metal and may in addition be electroplated.
