Abstract
Melamine is produced by heating dicyandiamide with gaseous ammonia under pressure, the size of the vessel being so chosen in relation to the mass of the reactants that all the residual water in the dicyandiamide (20 per cent or more) is present in the vapour phase under the conditions of the reaction. The temperature is above 100 DEG C. (190 DEG C. specified) and the pressure within the range 50-200 atmospheres (100 specified). The example shows the yield of melamine by the process of the invention as compared with a known process.
